The Importance of Reading Job Posts Carefully Before Applying
Job searching as a nanny can be exciting yet overwhelming. The desire to secure a great position can sometimes make candidates rush through the application process, leading to mistakes that could cost them valuable opportunities. One of the most common yet easily avoidable mistakes? Not reading the job posting carefully.

Recently, I shared a nanny job opportunity in one of my job blast emails to my subscribers. The post included very clear instructions on applying, as I was sharing it on behalf of an agency owner who had contacted me. I was not acting as a recruiter or agency but simply passing along a valuable opportunity.
What happened next truly surprised me. I received an inordinate number of emails from candidates who had not read the job posting thoroughly. Some emails were lovely (and I truly appreciated those!), but many highlighted a major issue in job applications—lack of attention to detail.
Here are some of the most common mistakes I saw:
1️⃣ Candidates Asking Me to Tell Them How to Apply
The job posting clearly outlined how to apply, yet I received many emails saying:
"Can you tell me how to apply for this role?"
If a job posting has detailed instructions, take the time to read them carefully. If you’re interested in a position, you should never rely on someone else to guide you through the process. Employers are looking for candidates who show initiative and can follow directions. If you struggle with this early in the hiring process, it could be a red flag to recruiters.
2️⃣ Candidates Asking Me to Forward Their Details to the Agency
The agency’s email address was included in the job blast for a reason—to ensure that applications were sent directly to the right person. However, many candidates reached out to me asking:
"Can you forward my resume to the agency?"
This is another sign of not reading instructions carefully. Agencies and recruiters are looking for attention to detail—they want to know that you can follow specific steps without needing hand-holding. If you can’t follow simple application instructions, how can they trust you to handle a family's detailed childcare needs?
3️⃣ Candidates Asking Me to Review Their Resumes Before Applying
I was flattered by how many candidates trusted me to review their resumes, but with hundreds of applicants, it’s impossible to respond to everyone individually. More importantly, this delays your application process—by the time I could get back to you, the role might already be filled.
When a job opportunity is shared, time is of the essence. Instead of waiting for someone to review your resume:
✅ Have a polished and updated resume ready at all times.
✅ Keep a template cover letter that you can customize quickly.
✅ Proofread your application before hitting "send."
Why Reading Job Posts Matters to Your Success
Recruiters and agency owners are always watching. They notice:
✔️ Who applies correctly.
✔️ Who follows the requested steps.
✔️ The tone and professionalism of your emails.
Making a strong first impression is key. Even if you’re the most qualified nanny for the job, you may never get an interview if you don’t follow directions.
Best Practices for Applying to Nanny Jobs
To help you put your best foot forward, here are some essential tips to follow when applying for jobs:
🔍 1. Read the Entire Job Post Carefully
Before hitting "apply," make sure you understand:
The job requirements
The location and schedule
The salary or benefits (if listed)
The application process (email, form submission, resume attachment, etc.)
Recruiters appreciate candidates who take the time to understand the job before applying.
✉️ 2. Follow Application Instructions Exactly
If a post says, “Email your resume with the subject line: Full-Time Nanny – NYC”, then do exactly that.
❌ Do not send a blank email with just your resume attached.
❌ Do not send a vague “I’m interested” message.
✅ Instead, write a professional email with your resume and a personalized cover letter.
⏳ 3. Apply in a Timely Manner
The best jobs fill quickly. If you see a great opportunity, don’t wait days to apply. Be proactive, but also make sure your application is polished before sending it.
📧 4. Send a Professional Email
Your first email should always be:
✔️ Polite and well-written (avoid slang or overly casual language).
✔️ To the point (keep it brief but informative).
✔️ Personalized (mention something specific about the job post).
Example:
Subject: Full-Time Nanny – NYC Application
Dear [Recruiter’s Name],
I hope you’re having a wonderful day. My name is [Your Name], and I am very excited about the opportunity for the full-time nanny position in NYC. With [X years] of experience caring for children of all ages, I believe I would be an excellent fit for this role.
I have attached my resume for your review.
Please let me know if you need any additional information. I look forward to hearing from you!
Best,
[Your Name]
[Your Contact Information]
🔄 5. Follow Up (But Don’t Spam)
If you don’t hear back after a week, sending a polite follow-up email is okay. However, do not send daily emails or multiple messages on different platforms. Agencies receive hundreds of applications, and too many follow-ups can be seen as unprofessional.
