Taking Ownership of Your Nanny Job Search

As a nanny, finding the perfect job can sometimes feel like a full-time job itself. I often get messages like:

  • "I am registered with so many agencies. And unless you have a relationship with them, it’s hard to penetrate that shell."

  • "I don't have time to look at all the jobs; I need someone to help me."

While these sentiments are common, taking ownership of your job search is crucial. Being strategic in your approach can make all the difference. Here’s how you can take charge and find the perfect nanny position:

1. Be Organized

Start by organizing your job search. Keep a detailed record of the jobs you've applied for, including the date, position, and agency. This will help you follow up and avoid duplicate applications. I have created a spreadsheet that links your job search with the outcome. If you are interested in checking it out, let me know!

2. Keep Track

Maintain a job application log. This can be a simple spreadsheet or a dedicated notebook. Tracking your applications ensures you remember when to follow up and helps you stay on top of your search.

3. Be Prepared

Always have your resume updated and ready to go. Tailor it to highlight the skills and experiences most relevant to each job. Keep your references informed and ready to speak on your behalf.

4. Be Proactive in your Nanny Job Search

Don't wait for the perfect job to come to you. Contact agencies, network with other nannies, and join professional organizations. The more proactive you are, the more opportunities you'll uncover.

5. Network When Not Actively Job Searching

Build and maintain relationships within the nanny community even when you're not actively looking for a job. Attend conferences, join online forums, and participate in professional groups. These connections can lead to job opportunities and valuable support.

6. Use Job Boards to Aid Your Search

Job boards are powerful tools in your job search arsenal. They streamline the process and give you access to a wide range of opportunities. Here are some key job boards to consider:

Private-Staffing

I created this platform because I saw a need for it in the market. It is a worldwide job board. It's new but is gaining traction. Private-Staffing aims to connect candidates with high-quality job opportunities. You can upload your resume and a video sharing who you are and what you are looking for.

JobsforNannies

This job board is dedicated to nanny positions worldwide. It is based in the UK but has a worldwide reach. It's a great resource for finding jobs that suit your skills and preferences.

JobsinChildcare

Another UK-based platform with a global reach. JobsinChildcare offers a variety of childcare positions and is a valuable resource for nannies seeking new opportunities.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn isn't just for corporate professionals. It's a powerful tool for nannies, too. Create a professional profile, connect with agencies, and join relevant groups. LinkedIn can help you network and discover job openings that might not be advertised elsewhere.

The Role of Job Boards

Job boards are free for candidates; the agencies pay to post their job listings. This means you have access to a wealth of opportunities at no cost. Utilize these platforms to expand your job search and find positions that might not be listed elsewhere.

I consult on all these topics and recently spoke at the International Nanny Conference in Portland about the importance of job boards in a nanny's job search. These platforms can significantly streamline your search and connect you with the right families.
